Chania Airport (CHQ) sits about 14 km east of Chania town and is, by some distance, the gateway to the most spectacular half of Crete. From here you can be inside a Venetian harbour in 20 minutes, or on a pink beach at the end of Europe in under three hours. The trick is choosing what you actually have time for.
Here's how I'd prioritise it, as someone who drives these roads most days of the week.
If your flight lands after 18:00, skip the day trips for today. Go straight to your hotel in Chania or Rethymno, have a slow dinner, and hit the road fresh in the morning. Every mistake I see tourists make starts with "we were going to drive to Balos after a red-eye".
1. Chania Old Town (20 minutes away)
If your flight lands before noon, Chania Old Town is the obvious first stop. The Venetian harbour, the Turkish mosque on the waterfront, a dozen tavernas that the locals actually eat at — you can do it justice in 3–4 hours and still be at your hotel before sunset.
Park at Koum Kapi if your driver can drop you there — it saves you the long walk from the main square and you end at the nice seafood places for dinner.
2. Balos Lagoon (90 minutes + boat)
Everyone wants to go to Balos, and for once, the hype is justified. The turquoise lagoon at the tip of the Gramvousa peninsula genuinely looks like a screensaver. But there's a choice to make:
- By road — the last 8 km is a rough dirt track, you'll want a 4×4 or a driver who's done it before. Then a 20-minute walk down to the beach.
- By boat from Kissamos — two hours each way, more expensive, but you also get Gramvousa island with its castle.
The boat tour was touristy but worth it for Gramvousa. If I came again I'd do the road version — less crowded by 15:00.
Most rental-car contracts explicitly exclude the Balos dirt road. If anything happens, your insurance is void. Either book a transfer with a driver who knows the road, or do the boat option.
3. Falasarna (50 minutes west)
If Balos feels like a big commitment, Falasarna is the smart compromise. It's a long stretch of proper sand, west-facing (so the best sunsets on the whole island), with enough tavernas that you won't be stuck eating at the first one.
Come in the late afternoon, swim for an hour, watch the sunset from Gramvousa Taverna or Akrogiali, then drive back. You'll be home by 22:00.
4. Elafonisi (2 hours southwest)
Elafonisi is the day trip that people from Heraklion probably shouldn't attempt — but from Chania it's very doable. The drive is slow (mountain roads, one lane most of the way) but the destination earns it: pink-tinged sand, a shallow lagoon you can wade across to a small islet, and crystal-clear water even in August.
The challenge isn't the drive, it's the crowds. By 11:00 in summer the parking lot is full and the beach feels like a festival.
Leave Chania by 07:30. You'll be on the beach by 09:30, have it mostly to yourself until 10:30, then leave as the buses arrive. Be back at your hotel by 14:00 and use the afternoon for a proper lunch somewhere quiet.
5. Samaria Gorge (full-day commitment)
The Samaria Gorge is the only destination on this list that really needs a full day — and a bit of planning. You don't just drive there; you drive to Omalos (the top of the gorge), walk 16 km downhill through the gorge, and get picked up by a different vehicle at Agia Roumeli on the south coast. Then a ferry to Sfakia or Sougia, then drive back.
Budget 10–12 hours door-to-door. Bring proper shoes, 2 litres of water minimum, and don't attempt it after age 65 or with small children — it's a serious hike on rough terrain.
6. Rethymno (45 minutes east)
If the weather's bad or you want a slower day, Rethymno is the move. Smaller than Chania but its old town is just as charming, the Venetian fortress has the best sunset view on the north coast, and it's close enough that you can be back in Chania for dinner.
Good combo: Rethymno old town in the morning, Preveli palm-beach in the afternoon if the south-coast road is calm.
What to skip
Heraklion as a day trip from CHQ. Three hours each way, and Heraklion city itself is the least rewarding hour you can spend in Crete. If you need to see Knossos, base yourself from Heraklion side for that day instead of flying in and out of the same airport. If your itinerary already has you flying out of Heraklion Airport, just move Knossos to your departure day.
